September 2026 pricing data
Pine removal cost by height
Pine pricing is unusually flat at the low end and unusually steep at the top. A 30 ft pine is a few hours of work. An 85 ft pine is a crane job, and the price jumps accordingly.
| Height | Typical trunk | Cost range | National avg. | Crew time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 30 ft | Under 12" | $250 – $600 | $420 | 1–3 hrs |
| 30 – 50 ft | 12–20" | $450 – $1,000 | $750 | 3–5 hrs |
| 50 – 80 ft | 20–30" | $800 – $1,800 | $1,300 | 1 day |
| 80 ft + | 30" + | $1,200 – $2,500 | $1,850 | 1–2 days + crane |

The softwood advantage, and where it stops
Cheap wood, expensive height
Two forces pull pine pricing in opposite directions, and understanding them tells you which quote is realistic.
Soft, light wood
At ~25 lb/ft³ pine weighs about half what oak does. Limbs come down lighter, ropes see less load, and a chipper eats pine roughly twice as fast. On the same trunk diameter, expect pine to cost 50–65% less than oak.
~2× faster than hardwoodStraight, tall growth
Pines grow vertically with a single dominant leader and few lateral branches. That shape is easy to section in mid-air, but it also means the tree keeps going. White pines regularly reach 80–100 ft, and loblolly hits 100 ft in the South.
Commonly exceeds 80 ftThe height crossover
Above roughly 80 ft, species stops mattering. The constraint becomes reach, not weight. You need a crane or lift either way. A 90 ft pine and a 90 ft oak are within a few hundred dollars of each other.
Past 80 ft, height winsPine debris: the detail most quotes miss
Pine generates a specific kind of disposal problem that other species do not, and it shows up as an extra line item if you do not ask about it up front.
Sap. Pine resin is sticky enough to foul chipper blades, truck beds and driveway surfaces. Some crews apply a small surcharge, and resin stains on a concrete drive can be difficult to remove after the fact.
Acidic needles. Pine needles lower soil pH as they break down and are slow to compost. If you plan to keep the chips for mulch, be aware they are not suitable for most garden beds without a year of composting first.
Cone and needle volume. A mature pine carries far more fine debris by volume than its trunk suggests. Hauling it adds $75–$200 on a large tree, a line item you can drop by keeping chips on site, though see the note above.
Common questions
Pine tree removal: frequently asked questions
- Pine tree removal costs $250–$1,500 for most residential trees, averaging around $750 for a 40–60 ft tree. Pine is the cheapest of the common large conifers because the wood is soft and cuts fast. The exception is height: mature pines routinely pass 80 ft, and at that size a “cheap” softwood costs the same as a hardwood.
- Softwood. Pine weighs roughly 25 lb per cubic foot dry against oak’s 47 lb, so limbs are lighter, rigging is faster, and the chipper processes far more volume per hour. Crews can often fell a pine in fewer, larger sections rather than rigging it down piece by piece.
- Pines over 80 ft typically run $1,200–$2,500. Height is the dominant cost at that scale regardless of species. Above roughly 80 ft most crews bring in a crane or work from an aerial lift, adding $800–$2,000 in equipment. A tall pine in a tight backyard can cost more than a short oak.
- Pine needles and cones are acidic and slow to break down, and pine sap is sticky enough to foul chipper blades and truck beds. Some crews charge a small surcharge to haul pine debris, and many will not accept it as mulch stock. If you keep the chips, be aware they are not ideal for garden beds without composting first.
- Grinding the stump is always extra. Expect $3–$5 per inch of diameter with a $100 minimum. But pine stumps are softwood, so they sit at the bottom of that range, and they rot faster than hardwood stumps. Some homeowners leave pine stumps to decay naturally; the trade-off is that a rotting stump becomes a termite and fungal host within 3–5 years.
